Fair Use & Non-Substitutive Use Policy
Purpose: Eko exists to detect and interpret change, not to reproduce or replace source content. This policy defines how summaries are produced to remain fair-use safe and non-substitutive.
Core Principles
- Transformative: Outputs abstract, label, and interpret deltas.
- Non‑replacement: Users must still visit the source to consume content.
- Minimal quoting: Avoid verbatim text; never reconstruct pages.
- Publisher intent: Respect access controls, paywalls, and robots signals.
Allowed
- High‑level summaries of what changed.
- Structural diffs (added/removed sections, reordered items).
- Interpreted impact and confidence labeling.
Prohibited
- Large quotations or full sections.
- Page reconstruction or screenshots of protected content.
- Guessing hidden or paywalled text.
Safeguards
- Section hashing & delta‑first rendering.
- Output length caps.
- Confidence downgrades when ambiguity exists.
Enforcement
Violations trigger summary truncation or suppression. Repeat violations require prompt updates or code fixes.
